ACR #2 5/29/2009

This was a think tank draft done by Cato, Chet and I.

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

This pack is amazing. 11 playables, 12 if you count red Craw Wurm.Usually it’s a good idea to figure out what will table, but this pack is so bonkers it could be a number of things. I went with O Ring  over Branching Bolt for several reasons. One, it’s mono colored. Two, I prefer Esper if I can draft it. Three, and this is not too important since they are to your left, the next several picks are likely Jund and Naya, leaving you with a poor pack 2, and maybe forcing out out of the shard entirely(perhaps W/G Naya is possible, but not big guy Naya)

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

I have to stop taking this card so highly without a Sanctum. Deft Duelist was probably the correct choice here since it’s way better than it used to be, but the Capsule is solid as well.
Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

I’m starting to feel like I have options here, and a strong manabase is important for any deck that wants to win consistently.
Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

W/U seems good here. I could take Capsule and devote myself to Esper, but this choice is better.
Pack 1 pick 7:

Pack 1 pick 8:

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

Etherium Sculptor is missing. This was an 8/4, so I can’t tell you what went on there, but I’m extra pleased to see this.
Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

I hateses Bant Battlemage, but given how things ended up, it may have been correct.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

I’m going to put my money where my mouth is and take this catch all removal spell over a much needed 3/3 flyer. I’d say in 8 out of 10 drafts I win, I have to beat a Tower Gargoyle to get there. ACR might change that, but we’ll see.
Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

I didn’t really want to pick this, since I want to curve out, but I don’t like any of the other cards except Lapse, and it usually goes very late.
Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

Boo. My 1/1 flier feels unimpressive compared to the black bombs in this one.
Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

There was some debate about this one. I wanted to have something at the high end of the curve to play if the game went long. Chet and Cato(i think) wanted the Outlander. My second choice was actually Trailblazer. This six drop didn’t even make my deck, making the Trailblazer the right pick.

What a gift! This deck should be a contender, barring everyone having Infest.
Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

I think these people underestimate this card severely. Any of the Naya players with ANY reasonable chance to splash this card should have probably taken it.
Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

The card I’d least like to see again.
Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

A little counterproductive in my deck, but it’s needed since this shard usually is light on removal.
Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 10:

My Pick:

This card is better than this pick.

Pack 3 pick 11:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 12:

My Pick:

I confess. I took a ticket or so instead of a cycler I didn’t want.

I had this draft emailed to me by Cato, so again I don’t have a decklist. I do know I wish i had that Trailblazer, or even the Recluse I passed late. I played all three Lapses and the Offering to Asha, since I can simply win with a two drop, three drop counter, counter. We ended up getting to the finals, and lost to what seemed like an inferior deck. It had an ok curve, but played some late game stuff, which we simply didn’t have, and also had Volcanic Fallout. other highlights include:

Never having Sledge equipped to anything.

Casting all three Lapses and the Offering one game.

Being way behind in the finals, and almost coming back with Finest Hour and a lowly Squire.

Finals opponent Cascading into Bant Charm with no blue up. I Lapse it, he land cycles after he gets it back.

I suppose I’ll take four packs since this deck wasn’t done perfectly. I could have won with just a tad better draw though in the last game.
